Mapping chowk of Swaminarayan Temple, Kalupur

Swaminarayan Temple, Ahmedabad is the first temple of the Swaminarayan Sampraday. It is located in Kalupur area of Ahmedabad. The temple resembles a fairy-tale with all its colours and opulent carvings that profusely embellish every wooden bracket, column and arch. The temple attracts a million people from neighbourhood and also the outsides of nation. Heritage Walk of Ahmedabad city, started on 19 November 1997 by the local municipal corporation in association with the Foundation for Conservation and Research of Urban Traditional Architecture (CRUTA) starts from this temple and ends at the Jama Masjid, after touring 18 sites.

Networks of visitors:  Map shows the network of visitors coming to the temple. The blue line shows the local people coming to the temple and the thickness of the line shows the density of people. Green is for Gujarat, Purple is for India and red is for foreign 1.jpg

Typology:  Old buildings and new buildings which are depicted by 2 different colors. Second map represents the building materials used in that area.


Architectural Elements : Every place has its own feel or uniqueness that makes it different from any other places in the world. This map highlights the unique elements.


Movement: These maps show the pedestrian and vehicular movement at three different times (morning, noon, evening). Maps on the right indicate the pause points of people. The size of circle indicates the percentage of people and vehicle at that place. Bigger circle represent the more amount of people or vehicle in these map.

When we approached the temple, we first experienced smell of different food items and as we moved ahead we came across smell of fresh vegetables, flowers, tea and garbage as well. Hence these layers of smell itself tells us about street surroundings.


Animal movement & people gathering spots: Series of map shows movement of animals and birds, garbage and people gathering spots. From this we can relate relationship of animals and people. Red line are for dogs they have the maximum movement in area during morning and evening similar to people. Dogs are friendly to people. Most of these lines pass through the garbage and vegetable spots and also cow’s movement was seen nearby by vegetable vendors in morning.
