Looking at the cities Allan B. Jacobs – Saloni Shah

The writer stresses on observing the elements of the city to document it. He uses his walk at Diamond street as an example to show how observing helps you go to little details and understand the evolution of the place. He looks at the changes in the original structures to think about the evolution of the place. He also talks about he and his colleagues did several walks observing the places. After the walk the observers spent some time listing the things they have seen and its relevance for the study. Then they present general analysis of the history, evolution and present status of the area. It also shows the diversity of people, communities, economic status, major issues, problems and much more. It also shows the difference between reality and abstraction. Hence it is seen that a small walk in the city observing things is a research tool to know a place and its characteristic better.
